Anyone know what happens to toys when the manufacturer stops producing them and stores pull them?

Q. Does anyone know what happens to the toys on the shelf at places like Wal*Mart or Toy's R Us when the manufacturer ceases production, or replaces them with a new line, and all of the sudden the old toys, "disappear" from the shelf? I know sometimes they move them to clearance isles, but sometimes they just disappear. Does anyone out there know? Are they sent back to the manufacturer? Are they melted down to make more toys? Are they donated to charity for some kind of tax write-off?

A. Frequently they are clearanced at other stores like Big Lots and other dime stores. Other times they are sold into other countries where they just repackaged

Then other times they just get stored and forgotten about. In 1999 it was found that Hasbro Canada had a large warehouse full of GIJoe toys, it was emptied out by collectors in a matter of days.
