We are expecting a child in December 2009 (we don't know gender yet) and have started a registry at Babies-R-Us, but cannot find many products: wool/alpaca blankets, cotton plush blankets, modern looking cotton nursery bedding, organic toys, foam mattress, light-weight crib in cherry color (there is one in maple color at Babies-R-Us though) ...
Does it mean that we should open a registry at another store instead? What other national store chain would be good for a variety of organic/quality baby products?

Q. I think I'll have a baby shower, so I'm planning to register in a big store like Babies R Us. However, I'm not exactly sure on what to include. I started buying some clothing; but I decided to register since people usually give repeated presents at Baby Showers and I would like to get some useful things.

Can you please help me? This is my first baby, 21 week pregnant.

A. Go for the essentials:

Good sterilizer
Go for the anti-colic baby bottles with extra silicone accessories (these are a life saver)
stroller for all ages (wherein the baby car seat bolts on to the stroller and whenyour baby is big, just remove the baby car seat and your toddler can use it)
baby car seat
Bathe stuff ( baby tub, baby sponge, baby shampoo, soap, towels, non-slip rubber mat)
thermal blankets
burping cloth
mittens, bonnets, booties, clothes
stuff for cleaning bottles (bottle brush, washing liquid safe for babies)
crib! with crib set of pillows and comforters
playpen which can be kept and folded
wipes


then lastly
toys
diapers ( you will not know how big or small your baby is, so if you ask for a ton of diapers and your baby doesn't properly fit in it, it will be a waste)
and whatever the baby store tries to sell you :)

breast pumps, breast feeding pillows

teethers, sippy cups, plates and utensil set (when your baby is older)

How much to spend on a first birthday party?

Q. I am curious if anyone knows how much to spend on a child's first birthday party? We are friends with the couple, as my husband knew the father in HS and they have reconnected within the last 1.5 years. Also, they sent a Toys R Us registry with the invitation. I was going to buy clothes, but now I am questioning what to do. Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

A. It just depends on what you can afford. I think for a first birthday $10-25 is appropriate unless you have lots of money. If you can only afford an inexpensive gift, make sure it is nicely packaged and wrapped to show that you care :)

A. Yes it is fine. She is one. She doesn't REALLY want or need anything.....and she will never remember it. So if it makes it easier on you to have people buy you wipes etc...do it. She will appreciate the attention more than anything.

Q. I got a wearable blanket at my shower...and it's SO nice, but it's purple...and I'm having a boy. I know they sell them at Toys r Us, so would they let me return it? At least for store credit, or maybe just to exchange for a new color?

A. I had horrible luck with them recently also. I will be calling their customer relations line to complain, but I don't think it will do any good. I was trying to return a ride on toy that had a huge "Toys R Us Exclusive" logo on the side. Obviously, it is from their store, but without a receipt, they completely denied me. Because of this experience, I will go out of my way to get our toys from Target or Wal-Mart instead. I was once a very loyal customer, but they have lost me now.

Do Toys R Us and Babies R Us have separate baby registries, or do they combine them?

Q. In my city the Babies R Us and Toys R Us are separate. I'm registered at BRU but was wondering if I went to TRU if I had to create a new registry or if the items I wanted would go onto the BRU registry.

A. It should be on the same registry.
If you go online there are baby items at Toys R Us and if you register for them they go onto your registry. I am pretty sure it is all one registry whether it be from Babies R Us or Toys R Us.
