Can someone please explain to me what 'Black Friday' is?
Q. I get the general idea that its a day of sales, but why is is such a huge deal?

A. I guess the huge deal (in the US anyways) is that it's the day after thanksgiving, so it officially marks the countdown to christmas. all the stores have sales to try to get people to start their christmas shopping. stores open at midnight or 2 or 4 am and offer big deals -- like 40 or 50% off certain things, especially electronics and toys (which you'd naturally be giving as gifts) -- so that people will come to the store and buy those things. the entire weekend is insane and they usually have the same sales on friday and saturday so that people will come out. there have been deaths due to black friday -- stampeding and stuff, no lie. the deals are advertised in the paper and on TV for weeks before. it's definitely becoming sort of a tradition for people to wake up early and get to "early bird" sales -- the best ones happen between, like, 4am and 10am for example.

in my opinion, it's RIDICULOUS! I know plenty of people who go out and do it though...to me, it's not worth it. they have lots of christmas sales between black friday and christmas so I just hit those up when I find a good deal...it's pointless to get up at 4am in order to save 30% off a leapfrog learning system or whatever. there's long lines and stuff gets snatched up quickly, so it's just not even worth it for me to go when the actual day is happening.

eta: they started small business saturday this year, where local businesses will be giving good deals apparently -- usually on black friday the big stores -- toys r us, target, walmart -- are doing the best deals. this saturday is supposed to be big for small businesses. there's also cyber monday, which is a huge day for online shopping because it's the first business day after the long weekend...LOTS of websites offer free shipping and a good percentage off of everything. what an f-ing circus!

eta again (sorry, bahaa): this explains it very well :)
