Has a stranger ever done something for you that truly impacted your life??

Q. What was it and did you ever think about paying it forward?

A. There have been many times in my life when a stranger has had a large impact on me. But there are two different times that really stand out to me.

The first one was back when I was battleing cancer. I had to have 12 operations in a 4 year period and the last 5 came back to back from November of 1988 through December 20th of 1988. My husband and I had 3 small daughters who were the ages of 8,5 and 2 years old. Money was tight and I was in the hospital for all of the girls birthdays, that year because one was born in late October and the older two had been born in December.

We had no family that lived close by, so my husband was trying his best to provide for our girls, celebrate their birthdays and do all of the Christmas shopping for them by himself. To say that money was tight would be putting it mildly and we didn't know how we were going to do it and I was of no help at all. That year, my final operation was on December 20th and when I was brought out of the operating room, they told my husband that there was nothing more they could do for me. The doctors and nurses called all of our families and told them I had less than 24 hours to live and my huband called in a priest to give me my last rights.

All I could think about was that our children were not going to have a Christmas that year and I cried non-stop.

I pulled through that night, and the next and the next, crying all the time for my children's misfortune of having an ill mother during the Holidays.

On Christmas Eve, while my husband and children were up at the hospital visiting me, a group of carrolers came by my room and sang Christmas songs for our family. When my husband and children left, I was so upset that my little girls would wake up to almost nothing the next morning and I wouldn't even be there to comfort them, that I started crying again and the nurse in charge of me got permission from my doctor, to give me a sedative.

It must have been very strong because the room I woke up in, was not the same one I had fallen asleep in the night before. The nurses from the O.R., the emergancy room and every floor of the hospital, along with many Doctors and others, had transformed my room in to a Christmas wonderland. There was a live tree with lights and decorations, in one corner of the room. The windows were covered with Christmas lights and decorations. There was a record player set up and ready to play Christmas songs. And to top it all off, there were toys and gifts piled sky high everywhere. Everything my girls could have ever wanted or wished for was there.

I called my husband and asked if he had anything to do with it and he said he had no idea. I later found out from my Surgeon that every person in the hospital decided that since I would not be home in time for Christmas that they would bring it to me. So he said that every one who worked there and could afford to help out bought at least one present for my children every time they went shopping for their own family. There was a nurse that kept up with all the gifts and made sure that nothing was duplicated and that each girl received the same amount of presents.

I cry everytime I remember that morning and what it felt like to have that many people care about my family. I never let a Christmas go by that I don't think of that morning and what it meant to me and my family and my two older daughters still remember that Christmas too.

The second time was about 10 years later and we had been hit with a flood in the middle of the night. We had 4 1/2 foot of saltwater in our house and we lost everything. The Red Cross came through and gave us vouchers for things like beds and clothes and such but all of our food was ruined and there was a lot olf things that the Red Cross could not cover.

We had taken the girls to Target to get clothes with their vouchers and my oldest one was discussing how she could get the most out of her voucher. She was trying to make it stretch as far as she could.

A lady, who was in the same department heard us talking and asked if we were one of the ones effected by the flood. I told her that we were and she expressed her sorrow for all we had lost. She asked my name and I told her, thinking nothing of it and she walked away after a few more minutes of small talk.

About 15 minutes after she walked away, I was paged over the loud speaker in the store and asked to come to the service desk. I thought that there must have been a problem with using a voucher at that location so off I went.

When I got to the service desk, I found that the woman who had spoken to me a bit earlier, had gone and gotten a money order for $500. and left it for me. When I got the money order there was a note attached that said," I didn't give you my name because I do not want this money back. But there is a condition that you have to follow. You will come upon people in your life that will need a little help here and there. I want you to help them in any way you can. If they need money and you have $50. you are to give it to them. If they need a place to stay and you trust them and have room, then you let them stay with you for as long as you can afford it."

Since then, my husband and I have given out at least that much money over the years and the lsit of friends and family that we have let live in our house is endless. Everytime someone moves out we tell each other "never again." But then a friend looses their home or can't pay their bills and we remember the lady who so wonderfully gave us money so freely, and we always do as the instructions say.

I can only hope that I have such a profound impact on someone else's life as these people have had on mine.

Yes, I need some suggestions again from you good people. I am at a lost again!!!?
Q. I want to go into business for myself. My mom wants me to become either a doctor or a lawyer, but those careers are not for me. I am a financial whiz and I've been a cashier at several stores, Toys R us for now. I have great customer service skills and I have artistic skills. I can sit down for hours editing a single picture, so I know I have patience. Would it be wise to go for what I want or go for what my parents want me to become? I mean they are paying for my college education. Owning a business is stressful I'm sure, but going to college during this recession and graduating after its over and opening my business for the first time would be the happiest day of my life.

A. Hey the same with my parents! They are paying for your college education which probably makes you feel guilty but at the end of the day its going to be you who is going to wake up and go fight cases as a lawyer, or give operations as a doctor and your parents wont be there so you should sit with your parents explain to them how you feel and think of another job that both you and your parents are happy with. Dont let your parents always make desicions for you....
