Suggestions for a quality 16" bike for a 5-year-old boy who can already ride ramps?
Q. Kid is turning 5 and has just outgrown his 12" toys-r-us bike. He loves going for long rides (3+ miles) and going over homemade ramps. He's been riding a hand-me-down 16" for a couple weeks and we want to get him his own 16" for his birthday. We want to get him a bike that is lighter than the cheap toystore bikes in case he wants to start competing in kids BMX. Brands? Models?

A. I would suggest a Haro for a beginner. It's a BMX bike, and there are some pretty good ones. Unless you want to spend over $500 on a racing bike which he can only use for BMX dirt racing, go with a BMX bike. There is a Haro 16" Forum Pro, or a Haro Z16 which has a pedal brake instead of a handbreak. You can go to www.harobikes.com and look at the bikes and use the store locator to find a store near you. There is also www.danscomp.com. They have some exceptional bikes for all ages. You just have to look around a bit. Danscomp is great to work with, I've ordered from there before. Best of luck.
