Q. My mom and I want to go shopping! We also want to go to restraunts toys r us, macys, apple, saxs, times square, sephora, american eagle, abercrombie, coach, china town, a lot of shopping. So, we need a place to stay were it is close to all the shopping. thank you !
A. The obvious area, if you want to be centrally located, would be Midtown. There's no need to waste your money staying in Times Square, when you can just walk there. Chinatown is downtown and some of the designer stores you mentioned are more uptown, so you'll never be where "everything is". The best you can do is stay in midtown on the west side, so you won't have to go too far in one direction or the other. This site should help you find plenty of hotels in that are (Midtown west): http://www.nycvacationstays.com/hotels.htm
Any good links/suggestions for a day trip to the Times Square area?
Q. We are heading to Jersey for Thanksgiving and decided to take an extra day and make a side trip. We're thinking of Times Square and a doubledecker bus ride. (we both grew up 15 minutes outside of NY so it's not completely foreign to us) Any good links or suggestions to help us plan our day? Thanks!

A. Wax museums never fail to bore me. how many times can you say "wow it looks so lifelike" before you want to leap out a window?
espn?????
toys r us? the store?? a field trip to a store? that trip would be more fun for some kids than others. "my mom gave me $30 to shop".... "your mom gave you money???"
planet hollywood? never been there.
hard rock? cool place.... for people who like to rock.
Ripleys believe it or not would be my choice of those.

How do I get to Canal st. from times square or from Penn station?
Q. Haven't decided to take the train or bus yet. the bus lets you off at times square but the train would be much cheaper. i want to go to canal st. then to shopping areas the world of disney store, toys r us and MTV store ect. How would I get to those from canal st. Should I just take a cab everywhere? I am assuming that would be expensive. please help TIA
A. Every other response to your questions has at least one mistake, if not many.
If you are at Penn Station you have two options:
1. Take the #1 local train downtown to Canal Street. It will be the 7th stop. (Note: if you go on the weekend, you can take the #2 or #3 trains which will stop at the #1 local platform at Penn Station)
2. Walk to 6th Avenue and 32nd, 33rd, or 34th street and take the N,Q,R, or W trains downtown to Canal Street. On the R or W it will be the 6th stop and on the N or Q it will be the 2nd stop. Take whichever one comes first as the difference in time between the local and the express trains is very small.
The shopping and tourist center of Chinatown is on Broadway and Canal Street. The N,Q,R, or W trains will leave you a couple of blocks closer to this area, but you will have to walk a couple of blocks from Penn Station to get them. In the end, it makes no difference.
From Times Square you should take the N,Q,R, or W trains downtown to Canal Street. It will be the 3rd stop on the N or Q and the 7th stop on the R or W.
The stores you are interested in are all in Times Square. If you need to get there from Chinatown you should take the N,Q,R, or W trains uptown to the 42nd Street Times Square station. Otherwise you can check them out before you head to Chinatown.
